David Boyd Receives Keane Award

Birmingham AL -- David Boyd, President of Vulcan Painters Inc., received the John B. Keane Award from SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings, at its annual meeting Feb. 7, in Phoenix, AZ. The award acknowledges outstanding leadership and significant contribution to the protective coatings industry and to SSPC. Vulcan Painters is a Southeastern painting contracting business founded in 1952 that specializes in industrial and commercial painting projects, blasting and coating of structural steel and sewer pipe, and electro-and powder coatings for pipe, automotive and other markets. The business includes three companies that employ approximately 160 workers.

Boyd has worked tirelessly for education and training in the trade, and developed a training program for painters that is used today by District Council 77 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), which includes the southeastern states of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. He is the co-chair of the IUPAT District Council 77 Training Fund. He was a member of the committee that established SSPC's Painting Contractor Certification Program in 1986, and Vulcan Painters now holds more PCCP certifications than any company in the U.S. He participated in SSPC's "Workforce Summit," as a member of its Education Program Advisory Committee and was a participant in SSPC's Strategic Planning Survey. He was awarded SSPC's Education Achievement Award in 2006.

He is on the board of Southside Holdings, the holding company for the publisher of "The Journal of Protective Coatings and Linings;" a member of the Industrial Painting Committee, Past President of the PDCA Southeastern Council and Past President of the PDCA Birmingham chapter. He is a member of ABC, AGC and NACE and a board member of Axxiom Manufacturing.
