David Boyd Receives Top SSPC Honor
Jan. 14, 2013 --David Boyd of Vulcan Painters Inc. received the Honorary Life Member award for 2012 from the Board of Governors of SSPC-the Society for Protective Coatings. It is the society's highest award, and is given in recognition of lifetime achievement.
The award was presented during the annual meeting of SSPC at its awards luncheon in San Antonio, Texas.
The award reads in part, "In recognition of your superb leadership, management skills, untiring efforts, and dedication in running one of the largest painting contractor firms in the nation and your giving of your personal time to SSPC with the goal of advancing the protective coatings industry and improving the quality of the training programs within SSPC."
Mr. Boyd has been a longtime champion of education and training for painters as part of quality control in the industrial painting business. He has worked to establish and implement training programs covering surface preparation, coating types, and equipment, and developed a training program that formed the basis for the program used today by District Council 77 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT). District 77 includes the southeastern states of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
He was the co-chair of the IUPAT District Council 77 Training Fund, and a member of the committee that established SSPC' s Painting Contractor Certification Program in 1986; and Vulcan Painters now holds more PCCP certifications than any company in the U.S.
Vulcan Painters was one of the first contractors to graduate painters from the Coating Application Specialist (CAS) program of SSPC.
The CAS program developed out of a consensus by industry, labor and government of the need for a workforce specialty for trained industrial painters.
