Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Parking Garage Renovation
Customer: Taylor Miree Construction for the Birmingham Airport Authority
Scope: Water blasting and painting the concrete walls, beams, ceilings, pillars and central helix on the 6 floors with ceilings, extending over approximately 5,500 parking spaces and a rental car facility underneath. Painters sprayed 98% of the 2.2 million square foot area, and brushed and rolled spaces between beams, and around edges. Painters entered each section and wrapped the lights, junction boxes, signs and handrails; then covered the floors and painted.
Product: The coating used is a BASF light reflective coating Master Protect HB 200 LR, designed to lighten dark areas, a one-coat system. Painters used airless spray equipment to apply the water-based coating.
Issues: More than 2.2 million square feet of surfaces had to be completed in 15 months without shutting down the parking deck. In winter months, concrete "sweating" required dehumidification equipment to continue the work. Sections were painted as the general contractor "captured" different parking areas of up to 800 spaces at a time.
Results: The light reflective coating makes the parking area much brighter and more user friendly for travelers.
