Industrial Tank Painting & Coating Contractors
Fuel tanks, pipelines, and other industrial assets are exposed to the heat, cold, and harsh weather daily, so they require the right protective coatings to prevent safety risks and costly repairs.
At Vulcan Painters, we provide industrial painting solutions, pipeline coatings, and tank linings for water, process, and aboveground fuel storage tanks—delivering lasting protection.
We serve industrial facilities across the Southeast, such as oil and gas production sites, power plants, manufacturing plants, transportation and logistics terminals, agricultural and chemical plants, and military fuel storage and distribution sites.
Our company is 9001:2015 certified, and our industrial tank painting craft workers maintain AMPP certifications that guide our prep, coating, and inspection for every project.
Why Industrial Tank Painting Matters for Your Facility
Tanks are critical assets in fuel, water, chemical, and process systems. Leaving tanks unprotected or poorly coated often leads to corrosion, leaks, environmental incidents, unplanned outages, and regulatory issues.
Proper tank coating application offers major benefits, such as:
- Corrosion Protection: Protective coatings seal out water, oxygen, and other elements that can cause corrosion, weaken structural integrity, and shorten the lifespan of your pipelines and concrete and steel tanks.
- Chemical Resistance: We provide specialized fuel system coating services tailored to the product you're storing or transporting, including diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, and ethanol blends. These coatings resist permeation, softening, and blistering, ensuring the tank lining maintains its integrity over time.
- Leak Prevention: Protective coatings reinforce the tank's surface by sealing cracks, joints, and other potential weak points. This reduces the risk of leaks and spills that can lead to accidents, environmental hazards, costly repairs, unplanned downtime, or regulatory fines.
- Protection of Product Quality: Properly applied, leak- and corrosion-resistant protective coatings prevent the tank's contents (water, fuel, or processing chemicals) from becoming contaminated or having their quality compromised by exposure to surrounding environmental conditions.
- Environmental Safety: A protective coating is your first line of defense against leaking fuel or chemicals that can contaminate soil, poison groundwater, and harm wildlife.
- Regulatory Compliance: Our specialized coatings and application methods meet EPA, OSHA, and NFPA safety, containment, and quality standards, so your team can spend less time worrying about violations and more time focusing on production.
Types of Industrial Tanks We Paint & Line
At Vulcan Painters, we offer a comprehensive range of industrial coating services tailored to fuel systems, pipelines, chemical tanks, water, and more:
Fuel Storage Tanks (ASTs & USTs)
We offer our industrial tank lining services to protect both aboveground and belowground storage tanks ("ASTs" & "USTs").
- Aboveground gas tanks—often found at tank farms, terminals, refineries, and power plants—are frequently exposed to sun, rain, and freeze/thaw cycles.
- Underground gas tanks and day tanks, on the other hand, are constantly exposed to moisture, soil acidity, and backfill pressure.
In both cases, our fuel tank painting craft workers select coating and lining systems based on fuel compatibility, vapor or full-immersion exposure, temperature range, and applicable VOC requirements. We also use fuel-resistant primers and topcoats engineered for exposure to hydrocarbon fuels, including ethanol-blended fuels and other additives.
Additionally, we inspect for early signs of coating failure, such as blistering, delamination, or pinholes, which can lead to corrosion, leaks, and regulatory concerns if left unchecked.
Water & Wastewater Tanks
Water storage tanks require a different level of consideration than fuel tanks. Potable water tanks require coating systems that ensure their water is safe to drink and has no impact on taste, odor, or water quality. However, wastewater tanks have vastly different demands, including enhanced chemical resistance, abrasion tolerance, or thermal stability, depending on the application.
We strive to ensure the materials and equipment we use on our clients' potable, non-potable, and wastewater tanks don't just meet, but exceed the EPA's strict compliance standards, protecting our clients, their facilities, and the people they serve.
Whether you need protective coatings for potable water tanks, underground storage tanks, clarifiers, or process water tanks, our industrial painting contractors will provide the right solutions and complete the job correctly the first time.
Chemical & Process Tanks
Acids, caustics, process fluids, and other chemicals you'll find in manufacturing and chemical plants are rough on metal tanks. Along with our proper surface preparation service, our corrosion-resistant industrial tank coatings create a barrier against chemical exposure, keeping your tanks and pipelines in perfect condition and in compliance with safety standards.
Industrial Tank Painting & Lining Services
Our industrial tank painting services cover the full lifecycle of your tanks—from surface prep and repairs to high-performance coatings and long-term maintenance.
Exterior Industrial Storage Tank Painting
To protect your water, fuel, or chemical processing tank's exterior (and the materials within the tank), we offer exterior industrial painting for corrosion protection, UV resistance, and aesthetic benefits. We also offer this painting service for tank shells, roofs, structural supports, ladders, and platforms.
Internal Tank Coating & Lining Services
For internal tank coating and lining, we apply epoxy-based, polymer-based, and other high-performance linings to your fuel, water, or chemical tanks to keep them clean, dry, and protected from corrosion. These linings also prevent product contamination and make tank interiors easier to clean. Our pipeline and tank coating solutions are selected based on the tank's contents and operating conditions to ensure compatibility and long-term reliability.
Throughout the application process, we constantly inspect the lining and its performance to ensure we deliver on the promise we make when you choose our contractors for this service.
Surface Preparation for Tanks
To ensure that the paint, linings, or coatings we apply to your industrial tank's interior or exterior adhere correctly, we always begin with proper surface preparation. We prepare surfaces using multiple methods, including abrasive blasting, power-tool cleaning, solvent cleaning, degreasing, and power washing.

Inspection, Maintenance & Recoating
We inspect your tanks regularly, recommend targeted repairs, and perform maintenance work (from touch-ups to full recoats) that keep your tanks and pipelines operating safely and efficiently.
Early maintenance is also a service we often recommend because it can help prevent full tank replacements and emergency repairs.

Our Process for Industrial Tank Painting Projects
When we take on a new project, we always want our clients to have a clear understanding of what to expect. We tend to follow the following process (and we'll make sure to keep you well-informed if our scope needs to follow a different direction for any reason):
- Assessment & Coating Recommendation
We begin by visiting your facility and conducting a visual inspection of the tank we'll be servicing, checking to see how any existing coatings are performing, and determining whether there is anything unique or specific to note about how we'll need to access the tank to perform service. We'll also be examining the tank's surrounding conditions.
Based on our assessment, we will work with coating manufacturers on their recommendation for the surface prep methods and the coating/lining system appropriate for the tank contents and environment. - Surface Preparation & Repairs
Once we agree on the services we'll perform for you, we will begin initial repairs (if needed) and surface preparation. - Coating & Lining Application
Our qualified team of industrial tank painting craft workers will then apply the coating/lining while continually monitoring environmental controls (e.g., temperature, humidity, and dew point) and performing quality checks. We will ensure this is done at a time that works well for your facility and prioritizes everyone's safety. Safety is our most important core value at Vulcan Painters! - Final Inspection & Documentation
Once the coating application is complete, we conduct dry film thickness checks and ensure everything aligns with our visual standards, and provide a turnover package for your records.

Project Spotlight: Industrial Tank Painting & Coating
A leading fabricator brought in Vulcan Painters to help upgrade an oil pipeline.
For the underground piping, we sealed weld joints with a 100% epoxy joint compound applied with a cartridge gun. We coated the above-ground spools with an epoxy primer, followed by a polyurethane finish, applying both with airless spray equipment. These coating procedures supported the overall upgrade of both aboveground and underground pipeline infrastructure.
This project is just one example of how Vulcan Painters delivers expert coating solutions for demanding industrial needs, protecting critical assets and extending service life.

FAQs About Industrial Tank Painting & Coating
How often should industrial tanks be repainted or relined?
Industrial tank paint and lining maintenance depends on the product contained (water, fuel, or chemicals), the lining/coating system used, and the surrounding environment. Generally, a full inspection is advisable for preventive maintenance every 1 to 2 years.
A full recoating/relining usually isn't required for a minimum of five years, unless you notice signs of the lining being compromised (leakage, corrosion, product contamination, or diminished quality) or you believe an accident near the equipment caused (or could have caused) damage. In those cases, you should immediately contact us for emergency repair services.
Can tank painting be done while the facility is operating?
Whether you, your employees, or others can be present in your facility while we work on tank painting or coating largely depends on a few factors, including foot traffic and the need for containment measures during surface preparation. Sometimes, the facility and all workers can remain fully operational; other times, partial shutdowns may be necessary to prevent safety risks, such as chemical exposure, tripping and falling on equipment or prep materials, or particulate inhalation.
What's the difference between industrial tank painting and standard commercial painting?
Industrial and commercial painting projects involve vastly different technologies, chemicals, surface preparation, safety, and certifications.
