Protecto 401 Ceramic Epoxy Applicators
Vulcan Pipe & Steel Coatings, Inc. was founded in 1983 to provide specialized services to the pipe industry. Vulcan Pipe coats ductile iron pipe, both lining and exterior coatings, steel pipe, structural steel, tanks, water and waste water equipment for waste water and sewage treatment facilities.
Ductile Iron Pipe
Both Vulcan Painters and Vulcan Pipe & Steel Coatings are Protecto 401™ Ceramic Epoxy applicators. Protecto 401™ is applied according to specifications in the "Protecto 401™ Ceramic Epoxy Standard for Lining Ductile Iron Pipe and Fittings for Sewer Service," Sixth Edition. Vulcan Painters worked with coating manufacturer Induron in its early formula testing of Protecto 401™, and Vulcan Painters owns the trademark on the Protecto 401™ name. Protecto 401™ lined ductile iron pipe and fittings provide the maximum protection available in sewer pipe applications. The first ductile iron pipe lined with Protecto 401™ was placed in service in 1981, and was coated by Vulcan Painters. Since then, Protecto 401™ has been used to line thousands of miles of ductile iron sewer pipe. Vulcan Painters and Vulcan Pipe and Steel Coatings have lined more of that pipe than any other coater in the world. The effectiveness of Protecto 401™ has been tested in the laboratory, and by decades of actual use in the field. Though the signature Protecto 401™ name on the label has changed from green to red, Protecto 401™ is the same product that has proven so effective and successful at resisting corrosion.
The standard specification for lining ductile iron pipe for sewer service with Protecto 401™, Material Safety Data Sheet, SDS, photos, and case studies are all avilable at the Protecto 401™ website, as well as procedures, performance testing data, comparative testing data, third party testing data and other technical information. Coatings Applied
Vulcan applies Protecto 401™, organic and inorganic zincs, polyurethanes, epoxy (amine or polyamide), fiberglass, vinyl esters, tape wrap (pipe), and coal tar epoxy. With more than 130,000 square feet of shop space on 30 acres, Vulcan has the capability to customize processes and equipment for individual projects.
ISO 9001:2015 Certified
Vulcan is certified to the ISO 9001:2015 quality assurance standard. This is a quality management system that requires us to implement systems to investigate problems and perform root cause analyses, with the goal of amending procedures to prevent similar errors in the future. We also measure customer (and employee) satisfaction through surveys, and strive for continuous improvement in all areas of service.
Vulcan’s Process
All products lined or coated at our shop follow the same inspection process to ensure that our customers receive only the highest quality finished product. These inspection processes include:
Receiving Inspection – We verify that the correct parts and quantities are received.
Pre-inspection – All products’ coating surfaces are checked for ability to hold the coating applied. Pipe is checked to ensure that no previous lining has been applied. All products are checked for oil, grease, asphalt, sharp edges, protrusions and other surface contamination.
Post Blast Inspection – Pipe is examined to ensure that the surface was prepared to the specification. Only a properly prepared substrate with the correct coating system gives the maximum protection.
In-process Inspection – During the application of coatings and linings, ambient conditions are monitored so that moisture and condensation are not trapped between the substrate and coating. Wet film thickness (WFT) is checked to insure proper dry film thickness.
Post Application Inspection – Dry film thickness (DFT) is checked on all coatings and linings to meet the specification. If required, pinhole detection can be conducted by wet sponge or high voltage testing.
Final Inspection – Prior to shipping, all products are inspected for scrapes, scratches and other areas that may need touch-up. Before shipments leave the yard, quantities, size and descriptions are verified.
Value Added
- The facility is equipped with electric infra-red heat for ideal coating conditions year round.
- Rail access is available.
- Vulcan Pipe & Steel also applies National Sanitary Foundation (NSF) approved linings for potable water service. The NSF regulates the use of coatings and materials for drinking water service.
- VPS has its own order tracking inventory control software.
PROTECTO 401™ Ceramic Epoxy
Protecto 401™ lined ductile iron pipe and fittings provide the maximum protection available in sewer pipe applications. The first ductile iron pipe lined with Protecto 401™ was placed in service in 1981. Since then, thousands of miles of ductile iron sewer pipe have been lined with Protecto 401™, and Vulcan Painters and Vulcan Pipe and Steel Coatings Inc. have lined more pipe than any other coater. Protecto 401™ has been successfully used in hundreds of sanitary sewer applications and has proven, through both laboratory testing and years of actual sewer service, to prevail against corrosion on all sizes of ductile iron pipe and fittings.
Performance
Protecto 401™ Ceramic Epoxy Lining was designed for and is used as protection for ductile iron sanitary sewer pipe, and it provides the reliability of cement mortar lining with the excellent corrosion protection of novalac epoxy. This concentration of protection has resulted in performance unparalleled by other linings.
PROTECTO 401™ Ceramic Epoxy Specifications
Protecto 401™ is applied to the interior of ductile iron pipe and fittings using specialized application equipment and stringent specifications. The lining is designed to be applied at a 40 mils thickness (per SSPC-PA2). We perform a non-destructive pinhole detection test and a thickness test to ensure application of a sound, chemically resistant protective lining. Because the specifications for application and testing of Protecto 401™ Ceramic Epoxy have been developed for ductile iron pipe using test data and performance history, no deviations from the specification are permitted without prior written approval of the lining manufacturer. For details of specifications and testing information, see the "Protecto 401 Ceramic Epoxy Standard for Lining Ductile Iron Pipe and Fittings for Sewer Service", Sixth Edition, available on the Protecto 401™ web site.
